Description
An EF Payne model 202 bamboo fly rod, 8′, 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #3 or #4 line. The rod weighs 4.1 ounces on my scale. This is an older Payne that has been refinished, with the older die stamp on the butt cap, agate stripper, and very fine tips with agate tip tops. Medium-slow full flexing action. Light flamed cane with brown main wraps with yellow edges on all, fore and aft at the keeper, male ferrules, and tip tops. It has additional wraps of wraps of purple at the keeper and male ferrules. The step ferrules are oxidized and are the early pot belly type. The stripper agate and the snakes are the high slant style. The keeper is one flat right. The freshly redone varnish is very good. The grip is 5 1/2″ long and turned to a blunt cigar profile. To my eye the front cork check, grip, and reel seat wood appear to have been replaced. The front cork check does not have the dished look. The flatted reel seat looks to have had a reel foot on it only once, not consistent with the age of this rod (95100 yrs old). The butt cap has the early stamp E.F. Payne, rod, E.F. Payne Rod Co., Makers.. The rod has a slight downward set. The rod bag is missing the hang tag.
