Description
A nice H.L. Leonard Hunt 38-4 model bamboo fly rod, 7′, 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #4 line. Serial #80162 which I think puts this just post-Maxwell (all of the parts appear to have beenmade during Maxwells tenure). Mint condition. Crisp dry fly action. The nodes have been pressed, not belt sanded and the ferrule oxidation is pewter, not the later full black. Best of all the tiger maple seat is one of the ones I baked in the oven for two days when I worked there to create a look I can see a mile away, a dark amber that’s better matched to the flame treatment of the cane. The rod features flamed cane with three up nodes. Superb varnish and plum colored wraps with an agate stripper and black snake guides. The Leonard step ferrules are oxidized pewter. The grip is 5 3/4″ long and turned to a slim cigar profile. The seat is comprised of a mortised, amber tiger maple seat, and the cap and ring boasts the H.L. Leonard Rod Co., the Rod Maker, since 1869″ stamp. The rod packs into a cloth bag and brass appointed rod tube.
