Description
An H.L. Leonard model SDF 4099 bamboo fly rod, 8’6″, 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #7 or #8 line. Salmon Dry Fly Rod. It weighs 5.99 ounces on my scale. The rod has seen light use with very light hand soiling to the grip and some cracks to the wraps due to casting. The ferrules are tight and the rod is straight. I’m told by the owner that Walt Carpenter refinished this rod. Wheat straw color cane with three up nodes. The main wraps are 316 red with purple and red edges at the keeper end male ferrules. The stripper is carbide with black snake guides. I dont see any wear to the inner guides. The grip is 6 3/4 long and styled to a medium cigar profile. The reel seat is an aluminum square-thread downlock with a nickel silver pocket cap and a varnished butternut spacer. The pocket cap is stamped: “H.L. Leonard Rod Co. Makers” in a cartouche. The nickel silver pocket cap is provisioned with a ferrule to hold a 2 long fighting butt. The hangtag is detached from the bag but re-attached to the aluminum tube. The evidence of at least part of the refinish is evident in the tips, which, while they are close enough dimensionally, one is 1/8 short and the wrap pattern does not precisely match the other, suggesting it came from another rod or was provided after the fact.
