HL Leonard Model 38-H Fly Rod 7′ 2/2 #3/4

Description

An H.L. Leonard 38-H bamboo fly rod, 7′, 2-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #4 line. Serial #555 (which I believe dates this to 1968). Normally I would list this as a #4 but it seems a bit slower than most of the 38-H’s I have felt and I could see using a #3. 2.8 ounces on my scale. Used condition with a well-tanned grip and faint casting cracks at the ferrules wraps. The reel seat has some cosmetic issues. The ferrules are tight and the rod is straight. The shaft varnish and wraps are very good with a finish typical of the period. Wheatstraw color cane in three-up node pattern. 326 red wraps. Carbide stripper with black snakes with some brassing to the inner guides. The step ferrules are polished. The grip is 5″ long and shaped to a medium cigar profile. The previous owner has written on the grip (in pencil I think) H.L.L. 38-H 2 7/8 Butternut slide-band seat. The wood has some dark stains and a small amount of rub off on the wood. None of these affect the function of the seat. The butt cap has been removed at some point having received a sizable ding in an attempt to drive out the pin. The cap will rock slightly but the pin holds it in place. The bottom of the Leonard stamp has been polished out of existence. Original bag and tube.
